John Wesley – Share The Wes!

August 31, 2007

 wesley.jpg

Great news for those of you who don’t own John Wesley’s entire back catalogue already – he’s giving it away for free! The motive behind this is to remove as many barriers as possible to getting it heard, and while he’ll continue to release new music for sale on CD initially, he’ll then make that free as well.

Read more about this unusual decision on his MySpace blog – and visit his MySpace page to download each of his albums (all compressed in their entirety in .zip format)

I’ve blogged about John Wesley once before, and he’s one of those guys who I’m always surprised isn’t better known. Hopefully this latest move will start to change that.

The Cure vs Missy Elliot – One Minute Cat

Robert Smith?

Another mashup – this time The Cure’s “Love Cats” is thrown in a moulinex blender with “One Minute Man” by Missy Elliot. Soooooperb!

Reservoir Dogs – The Silent Soundtrack

August 17, 2007

Tarantino

“Reservoir Dogs” is one of my favourite movie soundtracks – not so much for the music itself, or the atmosphere it gives the film, but more for the fact that it implies that there’s a whole other movie going on in the background. What else is going on while people listen to the laconic drawl of the DJ on K.B.I.L.L.Y.’s Super Sounds Of The Seventies? Here are all the songs he mentions in his links that we don’t get to hear in the movie, together with the ones he does ;-)

69 Dude!

August 17, 2007

Sitting in the BA lounge at Heathrow the other night with 20 minutes to spare I decided to add something to my blog. I’ve had this really cool mashup of Eminem and Genesis for a few years so I fired that on.

Then yesterday I was messing around on the net and decided to check out my blog stats. I normally get about 15 or 20 hits a day, but at lunchtime I was already on 62… so I checked where all the traffic was coming from. What on earth is the New York Magazine, and more to the point how did they find my blog? Chuffed to bits that they name checked me though!

I checked back in the evening, and my hit count had rocketed to almost 200… seems like a few people had seen the NY Mag article and pinched it for themselves, getting me even more traffic… like these guys and these guys.

When I got into work this morning I wondered where I ended the day. 280 hits! And already 85 for today! But even cooler, I made it onto WordPress’s “Top Posts” chart yesterday! Breaking into the top 100 at number… wait for it… 69 dude!!!

I’ve got an absolute cracker of a post lined up for later today. It’ll be my last post before I go away on holiday for a week, I wonder if the hits will keep on coming?

Eminem vs Genesis – Without Me vs Land Of Confusion

August 15, 2007

Spitting Genesis

I’m not a massive fan of Genesis, and as you progress through their back catalogue I like them even less, but there’s something about the “Invisible Touch” album that still appeals to me. I wish I could quote Patrick Bateman’s monologues on Genesis in “American Psycho” in full, but all I can remember about his reference to “Land Of Confusion” is “in this song, Phil Collins addresses the problem of abusive political authority…” as he ties up a prostitute!

However, Genesis are pretty naff on the whole, and I’d think long and hard before posting anything purely by them on here. But mashups are cool! Here’s what would happen if Patrick Bateman was to tie Phil Collins and Eminem together with one of his exquisite silk sheets and they were to make babies…

Frost* – Here Is The News

Here Is The News

What could be more fun than a cover version of an ELO song? Well, never having been a fan I would probably reply “plenty”, but now I’ve heard this I want to hear more. Sounds like this was an absolute blast in the studio, it’s like they’ve turned every dial up to 11 and just let it rip.

Cripes, I can’t wait for their new album.

Gazpacho – Snowman

August 6, 2007

Gazpacho

Another cracker from my favourite independent Norwegian band named after a bowl of soup. This one’s from their “When Earth Lets Go” album, and showcases their more mellow side (in comparison to the last track of theirs that I featured, Prisoner)

I’ve no idea why this band aren’t absolutely massive. I guess they’re just not on people’s radar screens – a great shame.
